Go Giants

 “Just Thinking”

Since the Giants are playing their home opener today, I thought that I would put together something with a Giants flair. I follow the Giants beat writer Maria Guardado, she wrote this week about the fact that it has been 25 years since Oracle Park opened its doors and became the new home for the Giants.

Oracle Park has had four different names since its opening in 2000; Pacific Bell Park (2000–2003), SBC Park (2004–2005), AT&T Park (2006–2018) and now Oracle Park (2019–present). The ballpark has witnessed its share of history, including three World Series title runs, three no-hitters and several performances for the record books.

The following are Guardado’s top 10 moments at Pack Bell, SBC, AT&T Oracle Park:

1. Aug. 7, 2007: Barry Bonds crowned the Home Run King, by hitting his 765th home run, breaking Hank Aarons 33-year-old record. I was fortunate to be at this game with my boys, sitting in Roc’s Club level seats behind home plate, what a great memory.

2. Oct. 16, 2014: Travis Ishikawa’s pennant-clinching homerun. The three-run walk-off home run vs the Cardinals in Game 5 of the 2014 National League Championship Series, sending the Giants to their third World Series in five years.

3. June 13, 2012: Matt Cain’s perfect game. Cain is the only pitcher in franchise history to throw a perfect game in a 10-0 win over the Astros. 14 strikeouts,125 pitches, Gregor Blanco’s incredible running catch in 7th inning and Joaquín Arias’s throw from deep third for the final out.

4. Oct. 24, 2012: Pablo Sandoval’s World Series Game 1, three-homer performance, setting the tone for the Giants’ four-game sweep of the Tigers in the World Series. Panda hit two of those home runs off current Giant Justin Verlander. I was on a friend’s boat in McCovey Cove, we would hear a roar from the crowd then rush into the cabin to huddle around the small TV to see what happened, unbelievable.

5. April 12, 2004: Barry Bonds hits his 660th career home run which tied him with Willie Mays.

6. Oct. 7, 2010: Tim Lincecum throws a 14-strikeout no-hitter against the Padres. Timmy would throw two no-hitters against the Padres (the second of which came at home on June 25, 2014),

7. Oct. 5, 2001: Barry Bonds breaks single-season home run record, by hitting his 71st home run of the season, breaking Mark McGwire’s three-year-old single-season record.

8. Oct. 30, 2012: The iconic picture of Marco Scutaro looking up into the rain after the Giants beat the Cardinals in a game 7 to win the NLCS.

9. Oct. 14, 2002: Kenny Lofton walk-off single in game 5 of the NLCS, sending the Giants back to their first World Series since 1989.

10. July 10, 2009: Jonathan Sánchez throws the first no-hitter by a Giant in 33 years.

I also follow @DylanIsADragon on Youtube and Insta – He posed the question, who is on the San Francisco Giants Mt. Rushmore. Good food for thought, who are the 4 most iconic Giants, he says Barry Bonds and Willie Mays either 1 and 2 or 2 and 1, hard to argue with that, next he has Buster Posey calling him the catalyst of the Giants dynasty and closing it out he has Madison Bumgarner, based on his 2014 World Series MVP performance including a complete-game shutout in Game 5 and a five-inning save in Game 7. It is hard to depute this list, but I have a hard time leaving out Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal or Will Clark.

Go Giants

Let me know what you think.
