The Post-Christmas Doldrums”

 “Just Thinking”

The yearly adjustment to the New Year, the transition from the festivities of Christmas to the quiet, often gloomy first days of the new year are what many refer to as the "post-Christmas doldrums”. The first few days of January often carry a unique blend of emotions and experiences that can leave many feeling a bit lost or downhearted after the holiday high.

It's back to work time, back to business as usual and working to uphold your New Years resolutions. Working on shedding the holiday bloat, the cookies candies and cakes are gone. Taking down the lights, crating up and storing the Christmas decorations, putting away the ugly sweaters for another year. Dragging the dried up and dead tree to the curb to be hauled away with all the discarded boxes and wrapping paper. While reminiscing how fun it was to spend time with loved ones.

In our house Christmas traditionally ended with little Christmas on January 6th or the Epiphany that celebrates when the three wise men were led to the baby Jesus by the Star of Bethlehem. Presenting Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, symbolic of His kingship and divinity.

January often brings colder, darker days, with less daylight to naturally boost our mood and energy. This change can exacerbate feelings of tiredness and lack of motivation, making the return to work or school after the holidays even more challenging.

After spending the first part of this discussing the doldrums, there is much to be grateful for in the New Year; new beginnings and fresh starts should always be celebrated. For us sports fans there have been many things to enjoy this January and some exciting things to look forward to. The first year of the college football expanded playoffs has been, for the most part, a huge success, Although I believe that the format should be expanded to 16 teams without the league champions getting a buy in week one, as evident by the fact that none of the first 4 seeds survived week two.

The Orange Bowl last Thursday night was a classic matchup between two perennial power house programs in which Notre Dame eked out a victory against a very physical Penn State team with a field goal on the last play of the game. Friday Nights Cotton Bowl was between two other storied programs Ohio State and Texas, with Ohio State pulling away in the fourth quarter for a decisive 28-14 victory. This sets up a highly anticipated Notre Dame vs. Ohio State National Championship game on Monday night, if the playoffs are any indication this should be an exciting culmination to very competitive season of College Football. Also, a great way to follow up a weekend of NFL playoffs and the Mondays Presidential Inauguration.

This has always been my favorite weekend of the NFL season, notwithstanding the absence of the 49ers. Eight teams, four games with two games on Saturday and two games on Sunday. All four games are great match ups and should be extremely exciting, The Lions and The Chiefs are the number 1 seeds and odds-on favorites to play in the Super Bowl, but there are some tough teams standing in their way.

Let me know what you think.
