The Sightline into San Francisco

Image
“Just Thinking” I was reflecting on how much the sightline into San Francisco changed over the years, thinking back on the view from the back seat of the family station wagon, so many things have changed and although many of my memories are fuzzy, some are quite clear, I did have to cheat a bit and search some stuff to see what I could find to bolster my recollection in some cases. One of my vivid memories is of the giant Mr. Peanut sign on top of the Planters Peanuts building; it also had little Mr. Peanuts on the parapet surrounding the building. The company closed the factory in 1976, and the following year, U-Haul took over the property, making it a moving and storage facility, which is still there today. Then were then there were some other signs near Potrero Hill that stick in my mind. The Hamm's ...

Time Waits For No One

Image
“Just Thinking” I often think about time, how it marches on, minute by minute, second by second. When we’re young, watching the clock tick toward recess, the minutes seem like hours. Yet when we’re taking a test, an hour is never long enough. The summers of our youth feel endless. The four years of high school, filled with change and growth, seem like a lifetime. We are young, learning life’s lessons as best we can. We grow, we create, we live. We welcome new lives into the world and, in time, mourn the loss of loved ones. We move forward, always forward, sometimes regretting the roads not taken but grateful for the ones we did. The joys and sorrows that shape us sail by, becoming the memories that make up th...

Image
Read My June 14th Newsletter At the FOMC press conference on June 12, 2024, Jerome Powell gave an opening statement and answered questions from reporters. The Federal Reserve decided to maintain the current federal funds rate rate and signaled only one rate cut by the end of 2024, down from the three cuts previously suggested. Despite inflation easing slightly, it remains high enough to raise concerns about long-term stability, though the Fed did note the recent progress toward their 2% goal. The Fed’s updated “dot plot” indicates a general leaning toward a more aggressive rate-cutting path in 2025, given the right conditions, with a projected federal funds rate of 4.1% by the year’s end. Keep reading for the direct timestamps and transcripts for every time Powell mentioned housing during the press conference. And be sure to tune into today’s Hot Sheet, where Byron Lazine broke it all down. COMMENTS ON HOUSING FROM POWELL’S OPENING STATEMENT Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s openi...
