A Little Bit of This and A Little Bit of That, This Friday

Daylight Saving Time Begins This Sunday

Get ready to “spring forward”! Daylight Saving Time officially begins this Sunday at 2:00 AM, when clocks move forward one hour. Unlike the old days, when we had to adjust every clock in the house, plus wristwatches and the car clocks, most electronic devices now reset themselves.

Personally, even though we lose an hour of sleep, I’m really looking forward to brighter evenings, later sunsets, and the feeling that spring is just around the corner.

The 2026 baseball season officially opens on March 25, but we don’t have to wait that long to see some of our favorite players take the field. The World Baseball Classic begins today and features an outstanding lineup of elite players from around the globe. The first round includes 20 countries competing in four locations: Houston, Miami, Tokyo, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The top two teams from each site will advance to the second round in Houston and Miami.

Still riding the afterglow of Olympic Gold, let’s go, Team USA!
USA! USA! USA!

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out Miracle: The Boys of ’80 on Netflix. It’s a very well‑done documentary on the 1980 Lake Placid Gold Medal hockey team. For those of us of a certain age, it’s a fantastic trip down memory lane, a nostalgic look back at a time when our nation was transitioning from the post‑Vietnam era into rising Middle East tensions and general uncertainty about who we were.

If you weren’t around in 1980, the film also does a great job explaining the world stage, why the win mattered so much, and who those young athletes were who toppled the Soviet “Super Team.”

I was called out, by someone who shall remain nameless, for an error (E3) in my February 14th newsletter. I wrote that Fred McGriff, “The Crime Dawg,” was a Giant. After initially blaming my research staff, Mr. Wiki and Mr. GPT, I had to eat crow and admit my mistake.

In the process of trying to prove myself right, I discovered that Darryl Strawberry was briefly a Giant, something I had absolutely no recollection of. He joined the team in 1994 after being released by the Dodgers, saw limited playing time in a comeback effort, and hit only four home runs with 17 RBI.

I was saddened to hear of Lou Holtz’s passing this week. He was one of the most inspirational speakers I’ve ever heard, his message went far beyond football and applied directly to life. His Three Rules of Life became guideposts for me, both as a coach and a parent:

1.       Do the right thing.

2.      Do everything to the best of your ability with the time allotted.

3.      Show people you care.

Holtz was a gifted motivator, funny, engaging, and deeply influential. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he became the only coach in history to lead six different college programs to bowl games. His decade at Notre Dame remains legendary: from 1986 to 1996, he earned 100 wins, built a 23‑game win streak, and delivered the Irish their most recent national championship in 1988.

His passing is significant not only because college football lost a champion, but because the nation lost a leader whose values shaped generations. Holtz’s journey, from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of college athletics, stands as a testament to perseverance, faith, and leading with integrity.

On the cold, snowy night of March 5, 1770, British soldiers opened fire on a mob of colonists in Boston in what would later become known as the Boston Massacre. Five colonists were killed after the crowd hurled snowballs, ice, and clubs in protest. The confrontation stemmed from rising anger over British troops occupying the city to enforce unpopular taxation measures passed by a Parliament in which Americans had no representation.

Today’s taxation may look nothing like those of 1770, but the expectation that citizens deserve a say in how they’re imposed hasn’t changed.”
