Yellowstone Wrap
"Just Thinking"
He is no John Wayne, but he is a pretty darn good cowboy. With the final episode of Yellowstone airing on Sunday, it seems like a good time to talk about the series, its spinoffs and some of Kevin Costner’s roles that have cemented him as a cornerstone of the modern Western genre.
Yellowstone and its off-shoots, 1883 and 1923 really brought westerns back to the forefront of our public consciousness. Set in Montana, the series centers around the Dutton family and its patriarch John Dutton - Kevin Costner, who owns the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, which is the largest contiguous ranch in the US. The story is a high-stakes blend of family drama, political intrigue, and violent power struggles. It explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the enduring conflict between tradition and progress.
1883 is a prequel to Yellowstone and is a story of the Dutton family as they journey westward in search of a new life. Led by James Dutton - Tim McGraw) and his wife, Margaret - Faith Hill, the family faces the trials of the Oregon Trail, including harsh landscapes, dangerous encounters, and internal struggles. The series highlights the grit and determination required to establish the Yellowstone Ranch in Montana.
1923 continues the Dutton family saga, focusing on the next generation as they navigate the challenges of the early 20th century. Led by Jacob Dutton - Harrison Ford and his wife Cara - Helen Mirren, the family confronts hardships such as Prohibition, the Great Depression, drought, and the rise of corporate interests threatening their ranch.
Yellowstone was a great ride, and I am sorry to see it end with John Dutton getting written out in this season’s opener, the end was inevitable. 1883 culminated with the family arriving in Montana and staking their claim to what would become the Yellowstone Ranch. 1923 on the other hand ended in 2023 and left us hanging, I was happy to see that season 2 is scheduled to air in February of 2025, nothing like a 2 year wait. In the meantime, Paramount is re-airing Season 1 of 1923 following new episodes of Yellowstone, so that we can all remember who’s who in the zoo.
I also was excited to see that there is another spinoff in the works called 6666. Set on the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas, 6666 shifts focus from Montana to Texas. The Four Sixes Ranch has been featured occasionally in Yellowstone, so we are all familiar with the ranch that Jimmy was exiled to. The series is described as examining the traditions, hardships, resilience and hard work required for the modern cowboy lifestyle.
Kevin Costner really makes a great cowboy and has played many diverse roles over the years, Open Range, Dances with Wolves, Wyatt Earp, Hatfields & McCoys, Horizon and starred in one of my all-time favorite movies, Silverado.
Silverado is a Cowboy Classic. It is a story about four drifters whose paths cross by chance and come together to take on corruption in the small western town of Silverado. The movie came out in 1985 and there are so many good actors who were young, fresh and ascending in this movie. The four drifters are Scott Glenn, Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner and Danny Glover. John Cleese plays a corrupt and somewhat bumbling lawman, the sheriff of Silverado is Brian Dennehy who is the villain. Jeff Goldblum portrays a traveling gambler that gets drug into choosing sides is the towns drama. Linda Hunt plays the bar manager that develops a relationship with Kevin Klein, this movies damsel in distress and Rosanna Arquette an attractive widow that catches the eye of both Klein and Glenn. If you haven’t seen it in a while, it has aged well, is still a fun ride and is well worth a watch.
Let me know what you think.
