Thanksgiving Thoughts 2024

 “Just Thinking”

Thanksgiving, or as it is known to the rest of the world, Thursday.

Wishing you a happy and healthy day filled with warmth, laughter, and the love of family and friends. Here is to gratitude, togetherness, and the blessings that make life beautiful. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving thoughts: The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade an American tradition that marks the beginning of the holiday season. This year’s parade celebrates the 98th anniversary, millions of people will be watching it on television and in person.

Another Thanksgiving tradition is football on television. Two traditional NFL teams that have been long associated with Thanksgiving games, the Lions and the Cowboys.

The Detroit Lions started hosting Thanksgiving Day games in 1934 and have played every Thanksgiving except during World War II.

The Dallas Cowboys joined the Thanksgiving tradition as a second team to host a game annually starting in 1966. With a few exceptions in the 1970s, the Cowboys played every Thanksgiving Day.

A third NFL game was added as a primetime game in 2006. Unlike the Lions and Cowboys, this game doesn’t feature a fixed host team.

John Madden was a longtime key figure as a longtime analyst for Thanksgiving Day football games. Madden introduced the concept of giving the games outstanding players his "Turkey Leg Award,” he would award literal turkey on national television to these players and would often have to resort 5 and 6 legged turkeys.

Madden also, famously popularized the "Turducken", a culinary creation consisting of a chicken stuffed into a duck, which is then stuffed into a turkey. He would often rave about it during broadcasts and even award them to players after the game.

John Madden's Thanksgiving highlights go beyond the field, embodying the joy, camaraderie, and lightheartedness that define this special holiday. His legacy lives on every Thanksgiving when football fans gather to watch football with family.

In the spirit of being grateful, I’m dropping a couple lists to complete my “Thanksgiving Just Thinking.”

Favorite Thanksgiving foods:

Turkey, Ham, Stuffing, Mash Potatoes, Gravy, Sweet Potatoes, Cranberry Sauce, Green Beans and Cornbread or Dinner Rolls. Pumpkin and Pecan Pie with whipped cream for dessert.

Movies with Memorable Thanksgiving Scenes:

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Home for the Holidays, Dutch, Son-in-Law, The Big Chill, Rocky, Miracle on 34th Street, Friendsgiving, Free Birds and The Ice Storm.

Thanksgiving doesn’t have as many dedicated songs as Christmas, but there are plenty of tunes that celebrate gratitude, togetherness, and the festive spirit of the holiday.

Here's a list of Thanksgiving-themed songs of Gratitude:

Over the River and Through the Woods, Simple Gifts, Thank You by Dido, Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep by Bing Crosby, Thanksgiving Song by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Home by Phillip Phillips, Thank You for Being a Friend by Andrew Gold, My Wish by Rascal Flatts, Blessed by Martina McBride, Home by Blake Shelton, Alice’s Restaurant Massacre by Arlo Guthrie and The Thanksgiving Song by Adam Sandler.

On a personal note, the Barberini's have been playing a touch football game every Thanksgiving morning rain or shine for 80 years. The faces have changed, third and forth generations now play the game, but the tradition remains.

Let me know what you think.
